Hoshizora no Memoria -Wish upon a Shooting Star- (星空のメモリア-Wish upon a shooting star-) Review

So I recently played Hoshizora no Memoria (or HoshiMemo as I’ll be calling it), so this is my review of it.

Official Website

The story begins with the protagonist, Kogasaka You, and his younger sister Chinami moving back to their hometown of Hibarigasaki. After living for several years in a city, their mother had died, and they returned to Hibarigaski to live with their aunt Shino. The game switches to a view of the past, where every day after school during the month before he left, You would go to the lookout and play with a girl, his first ever friend. Upon learning that You was moving to the city she became extremely upset, she makes a promise with him to return and marry her one-day, and kisses him on the forehead. Upon returning to Hibarigasaki years later, You stumbles into an abandoned, fenced-off lookout, whereupon he encounters a mysterious girl who looks exactly like his childhood friend did years ago. She introduces herself as Mare, and tells You that she has been waiting for him for a long time. You points out her unusual clothing and large scythe, and describes her as a shinigami, a name she takes upon herself. Later, while You is visiting Mare at the lookout, she tells him to close his eyes. When he complies, she stabs him in the chest with her scythe. While no blood is drawn or injury occurs, he forgets the name of his childhood friend, and Mare informs him that she has “reaped” his nightmare.

Meanwhile, back at school, You ends up joining the Astronomy Lover’s Circle (Tenkuru), which is in desperate need of new members and has been demoted from an official club to a hobby circle. At night, he continues to visit Mare at the lookout, all the while trying to remember the name of his childhood friend.

[from Wikipedia]

The scenario of HoshiMemo is quite good, though it’s not the best ever. But, it’s a slice of life, so it’s not going to be as good as something like Muv-Luv Alternative or Ace Attorney. The scenatio is still quite good for a slice of life.

A lot of people dislike the dramatic moments, but I actually liked them. It varies with the route, but it usually very good. I really love the characters, so let’s get into them

Kogasaka You

The main character of the visual novel. He is generally calm and collected, though can be very cynical at times. He reminds me a lot of Tomoya from Clannad. You’s a pretty good protagonist, though nothing special.

Minahoshi Asuho

Asuho is very kind and bubbly. She works at a maid café (though she denies it’s one) called Milky Way and is the vice-president of the Astronomy Club. She is You’s childhood friend. I think it’s pretty much impossible for the Japanese to not put childhood friends within a visual novel.

Anyways, Asuho is a pretty good character. She’s nothing special, but is really cute.

Aoi Isuzu

Isuzu is exceedingly cold and quiet. She is seen on the rooftop of the school looking at the stars. She is a first year and lives next door to You. I REALLY like Isuzu, she’s my 2nd favorite character, only after ***. Isuzu is the definition of the kind of character I like, a coodere who will soon warm up to you.20090404001803.jpgHigasaki Komomo

Komomo is the older of the Higasaki sisters and works at the family shrine. She’s a typical tsundere, though she is slightly better than others. I like Komomo, but I don’t find her to be all that interesting compared to the other characters. Honestly, I don’t know why she’s so popular.

Higasaki Kosame

Unlike her sister, I really like Kosame. She is the younger of the twins, and also works at the shrine. Kosame is REALLY cute! She is kind to almost everyone, but seems to be hiding quite a few secrets.

Kogasa Chinami

You’s younger sister and is incredibly cheerful. She doesn’t seem to be good at anything, besides annoying others. Everyone seems to hate Chinami, but I really like her. She is so cute!!!! I just want to hug her! I love imoutos, so that also helps. I wish I could have a girl like her to warm up my cold life.

Mare S. Ephemeral

Mare is Shinigami whom took away the memory of the girl You met at the lookout. She looks incredibly similar to the girl You met. However, Mare is quite different. She’s cynical, cold, sarcastic, and quiet. She hates being bossed around by others, and is reluctant to being friends as well.

I like Mare a lot. However, her route was AWFUL. It’s really just one H-Scene. I’m also going to question the legality of it.

Overall, I really like the characters, they’re nothing totally unique, but are still very likable.

The art is colorful and detailed. It’s fairly standard, so I don’t have much to say about it. Some of the CGs are kinda strange looking, but it’s nothing awful.

The music is very pretty, and soothing. I feel like I’m always praising music, but it is really nice.

The voice acting is also very good, everyone is voiced, besides You, of course. I can’t hear Mare’s voice without hearing Illya’s voice. But her actress does still do a great job (even if it’s not as good as her performance as Illya).

If you want a fairly good visual novel that won’t take too long to play, I recommend you play HoshiMemo. Especially if you like slice-of-life or charage.
